Federal supply group 31 is entirely dedicated to bearings. All bearings, whether they palm sized or meters in diameter fall in this supply group.
Antifriction unmounted bearings have an inner and outer ring that confine rollers or balls. These are the most effective in reducing friction. Plain bearings are the simplest and most cost effective by having no rolling elements, just a bearing surface. Mounted bearings are similar to antifriction unmounted bearings but they have flange adapters or hanger box units for special application. Because bearings are often subject to high stress environments, they wear out and rollers need replacement. It is possible to overhaul bearings, (more common the larger the unit) but often the entire bearing will be replaced. Surplus bearing are always in high demand and are often called for in the supply chain. Common manufactures are: Schaeffler, RBC, Timken, and SKF.
The group is further broken down into the following federal supply classes:
FSC 3110 Bearings Antifriction Unmounted
FSC 3120 Bearings Plain Unmounted
FSC 3130 Bearings Mounted
